The First People’s Hospital of Hangzhou, initially known as Hangzhou Municipal Hospital for Infectious Diseases, was established in 1923 with the fund raised by the Municipal Government and patriots. It was the first comprehensive hospital founded in Hangzhou. In June 1928, it was changed to Hangzhou Municipal Hospital, the only one incorporating internal medicine, surgery, gynecology & obstetrics, and pediatrics. The hospital continued its business under the name until 1966 when it was officially changed to the First Peoples’ Hospital of Hangzhou. Since 2000, it becomes the affiliated hospital to Zhejiang Academy of Medical Science Clinical Research Institute and Nanjing Medical & Technological University.

For nearly one century of construction and development, the Hospital has become the largest one of third-class A level in this city, and is able to provide services in medical care, education, scientific research, preventive and social health care. In addition to titles of Backbone Medical-care Institute in Hangzhou, Advanced Unit in National Health-Care System, Demonstrating Hospital Trusted by Citizens, Zhejiang Provincial Civilized Unit, Zhejiang Provincial Demonstrating Civilized Hospital, and Hangzhou Municipal Civilized Unit, it is also the sponsoring center for pharmacy, radiology, pathology, nursing, first aid, testing, obstetrics, and medical case history management and control, and the medical emergency center for rescuing pregnant and maternal women in critical situations. In 2008, the hospital began to carry out integrative management simultaneously with the Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital of Hangzhou, take on instructive management and supervision on maternal and child health care institutes and personnel training of them; and monitor the implementation of all tasks with regard to the maternal and child survival index, health index and quality index.

The Hospital is located along the scenic West Lake. It covers an area of 20,000 square meters, and is able to accommodate 1200 inpatients. Its worthwhile medical care, advanced hardware and facilities, and people-oriented service philosophy all together create a good environment for visiting patients. Every year, it receives about 2 million outpatients, and discharges approximately 35,000 inpatients, both of whom come not only from the whole province but also across the nation.

The Hospital weighs heavily on discipline setup and connotation building, and has very powerful strength. It is now contracted with about 1700 staff, 50% of whom have acquired the middle and senior titles, ten enjoy the special allowance from the municipal government and the State Council, and 17 have gained the Title of New Century Talents at provincial and municipal levels. It also includes 21 professors and associate professors from Nanjing Medial & Technological University, and over 20 part-time professors from Zhejiang University Medical College. The Hospital is in possession of more than 60 primary and secondary clinical medicine and/or technological departments, among which the digestive internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, ophthalmology, gynecology & obstetrics, neurological internal medicine, kidney internal medicine, and hematology are the provincial and municipal key disciplines, and the general surgery, otorhinolaryngology, endocrinology, critical care medicine, neurosurgery, and the central laboratory are the key medical specialties of the Hospital.

The Hospital insists on the strategy of “Science & Education Empowering the Hospital”, and has invested heavily on scientific researches. Its medical staff has obtained 99 research subjects of provincial and municipal levels in total in recent five years, and acquired 3 second and third Prizes in Zhejiang Scientific Technique Award, 16 first, second and third prizes in Hangzhou Scientific Technological Progress Award, and 34 first, second and third prizes in Zhejiang Medicine and Health Care Award for Scientific and Technological Innovation.
It maintains a good environment and advanced equipment for medical treatment, and is provided with a 700-square-meter endoscopy center dedicated to digestive internal medicine, including a full range of gastrointestinal endoscope (such as gastroscope, duodenoscope, enteroscope, proctoscope, EUS, capsule endoscope, choledochoscope, etc.), a radioactive diagnosis and treatment site with separate ERCP, and a gastrointestinal endoscopy video hall so as to meet with the diagnosis, treatment and education about various digestive diseases and cover all the aspects of gastrointestinal examination. The department of critical care medicine is provided with invasive, non-invasive ventilation, bedside hemo-filtration system, parenteral nutrition support, sub-hypothermia facilities, multi-functional terminals used to monitor patients physiologically, and other advanced rescue equipment. Their availability offers a sturdy support to successful rescues of critical patients. The outpatient and inpatient zones are built with infusion centers, and all the drug distributions are carried out in a bacteria-free environment, which tremendously cuts down the incidence of infections and infusion reactions. The PCR gene laboratory is one of the first to pass national verification. The Hospital is also accommodated to one of the world’s best operation rooms with quasi-molecule laser laminar flow, the roof helicopter pad, the roof garden, indoor greenery, and hotel-style care units.
To facilitate the visiting patients, the Hospital sets up a service center in the outpatient department, and promotes “one-stop” service, where visiting patients may complete all the procedures in the center from patient guide, booking, outpatient convenience, test reports delivery, medical inquiry, to approvals. It also takes the lead to launch the diversified registration system in the province, in which patients may book online, through telephone, or through the self-service machine in the outpatient hall for registration, in addition to traditional registration windows provided on each floor, so as to satisfy their requirements for registrations at different time sections. By virtue of advanced digital and informationized techniques, visitors can take a rest and watch television when waiting for the call from the auto-queue system. What’s more, it realizes the application of other technologies, including the outpatient doctor working station, online test report check, electronic medical recording, wireless network, and mobile inquiring system, and is the first one to implement the outpatient infusion management system.

In the past 85 years, we strived and marched bravely through ups and downs.
